The success story started in 1968 with an inquiry from an astronomical research institute in need of a suitable substrate material for their telescope mirror. The chief requirement called for very low thermal expansion of the material during nighttime observations. ZERODUR®, with a near-zero thermal expansion, seemed predestined for astronomical applications. From this moment on, the story of ZERODUR® has unfolded in various high-tech applications that demand the highest accuracy.
